  6. Wood Stove Ashes

HOT ASHES CANNOT BE PLACED IN TRASH OR RECYCLING CONTAINERS.

HOT ASHES CANNOT BE PLACED IN TRASH OR RECYCLING CONTAINERS.

ASHES MUST BE FULLY EXTINGUISHED AND COOLED BEFORE BEING PLACED IN GARBAGE.

    Follow these safety measures:

    • Dispose of ashes in a metal container. Douse the ashes with water and place the closed container outside of your home away from combustible materials. Leave the ashes in the container for several days before disposing of them.
    • DO NOT assume that the ashes are cold. Hot ashes CANNOT be placed in trash or recycling containers.
    • Once you are positive that your ashes are cold, you may then place them in a plastic bag, tie securely, and dispose of in your curbside trash can.
    • Teach family members about the dangers associated with hot ash disposal.

Below are REUSE ideas for wood ash.

    • Spread the ashes on sidewalks and driveways to melt snow and ice.
    • Add the ash to a compost pile to build your soil ammending properties.
    • Directly apply the ash to garden areas to increase potassium and raise pH level.
    • After verifying that the ash has cooled completely, dump them inside your chicken coop for your chickens. Dig a shallow hole to contain the ash for their fresh bath. Another added bonus is that it will help control mites.
    • Make a paste of ash and water to use as a metal polish; and it's non-toxic!
