Plastic hangers are made from many different types of plastic materials and are NOT recyclable in our RecycleOne program OR as a Bulky Rigid Plastic (they get tangled and caught in our baling equipment). They should be reused or disposed of with your regular garbage. Only plastic BOTTLES, CUPS & CONTAINERS can be placed in your curbside recycling bin (except for Styrofoam, prescription medicine bottles & motor oil bottles).

Metal hangers can be delivered to the Utica or Rome EcoDrops for recycling. Do not place hangers in your recycling container for curbside collection. A scrap metal recycling container is located at each location for all types of scrap metals including metal hangers, pots, pans, bicycles, desks and other types of scrap metal material.

Beginning January 1, 2015, the New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act will prohibit all households and generators of electronic waste from disposing of electronic waste such as computers, computer components, televisions and other electronic devices as garbage.

Since 2003, the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Management Authority has offered a free drop-off program for electronics recycling to residents and businesses in the two-County region.

Electronic waste CANNOT be placed in your curbside recycling container.

    OPTIONS FOR RECYCLING UNWANTED ELECTRONICS:

    • Residents should contact their municipality or waste hauler for electronic waste collection options.
    • Donate or sell unwanted, working electronics.
    • Residents and businesses may deliver unwanted electronic waste to the Authority's Utica and Rome EcoDrops year-round, at no charge for proper recycling. Businesses and institutions must schedule an appointment prior to delivery by calling 733-1224.

Many electronics container elements such as lead, mercury and cadmium that considered safe when the items are used as directed, but can be hazardous if disposed of with household trash and compacted at landfills. If improperly handled, these toxins can be released into the environment, posing a threat to human health. After the Authority accepts electronic waste, it is sent to a registered electronics dismantler who will separate the electronics into various raw materials such as plastic, glass, steel, copper, lead, gold and aluminum for recycling and reuse.

    Plastic Bags

If you do have to use plastic grocery bags and other plastic film items, follow the instructions below for proper recycling/disposal.

Although some plastic film items such as grocery bags have the recycling triangle with a number in the middle, they can not be recycled through the Authority’s recycling program. Plastic film can be brought to most local grocery stores for recycling.

DO NOT PLACE PLASTIC BAGS OR OTHER PLASTIC FILM IN YOUR RECYCLING CONTAINER.

As of January 1, 2009, a new statewide law requires certain retail and grocery stores to set up a plastic carry out bag recycling program for their customers. Stores with 10,000 square feet or more of retail space and chains which operate five or more stores with greater than 5,000 square feet of retail space, and which provide plastic carry out bags to customers are required to comply with the law.

The collection containers for plastic bags are usually found at the entrances/exits of the stores and they take any type of grocery store bag for recycling.

View a list of Plastic Plastic Film Drop-Off Locations.

View a list of Acceptable Plastic Film Items.

You can also find information and drop-off locations by visiting plasticfilmrecycling.org.

If you are a business with large quantities of clean plastic film, please contact Director of Recycling Emily Albright at emilya@ohswa.org for recycling options.

If you are unable to recycle your plastic grocery store bags through a take-back program or have Ziploc or bread bags, please reuse them and then dispose of them with your garbage.

RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES: Under the "New York State Rechargeable Battery Law" signed by the governor in December 2010, it is now illegal to toss rechargeable batteries in the trash in New York State.

    RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES:

Under the "New York State Rechargeable Battery Law" signed by the governor in December 2010, it is now illegal to toss rechargeable batteries in the trash in New York State. The New York State Rechargeable Battery Law requires battery collection by both local retailers and direct sellers of rechargeable batteries. Under this law, no person shall knowingly dispose of rechargeable batteries as solid waste at any time in the State. Rechargeable batteries contained in electronic products must be removed prior to disposal of such products.

Rechargeable batteries contain toxic metals that can be released into the environment when not managed correctly. Rechargeable batteries covered by this law include batteries for lap tops, cameras, cell phones, and rechargeable alkaline batteries.

If a person should dispose of rechargeable batteries as solid waste, they shall face fines. Any retailer who violates the law shall be liable for a civil penalty.

RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES SHOULD BE DELIVERED TO THE AUTHORITY FOR PROPER RECYCLING & DISPOSAL:

Rechargeable batteries include lithium ion, lead acid, nickel cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, & lithium ion polymer batteries.

These types of rechargeable can be found in household items such as electronic devices, medical devices, remote control toys, power tools, vacuums, chain saws, lawn mowers & more.

ALL types of lithium batteries (single use and rechargeable) require special disposal and should be brought to the Authority or one of the locations below.

Here is a list of locations in which you can drop-off your rechargeable batteries at no cost:

    • Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority Utica & Rome EcoDrops (year-round at no charge)
    • Best Buy - 4725 Commercial Drive, New Hartford
    • Home Depot - 545 French Road, New Hartford

    • Staples - 4795 Commercial Drive, New Hartford
    • Utica Valley Electric Supply - 2415 West Whitesboro Street, Yorkville
    • Verizon Wireless - 8500 Seneca Turnpike, New Hartford

    ALKALINE & OTHER NON-RECHARGABLE BATTERIES:

Household non-rechargeable alkaline, and carbon zinc batteries should be placed in your trash for disposal. Previously, alkaline battery disposal posed environmental threat because of the mercury content. Since mercury has been phased out of battery production, single-use alkaline battery disposal has become simpler and safer and such items should be placed with your trash. Examples of non-rechargeable batteries include; flashlight batteries, button batteries, remote control batteries - or any battery that can not be recharged.
