Hardcover Books

The Authority has received many requests from residents, schools and institutions to develop a hardcover book recycling program.

Currently, there are several locations that accept hardcover and paperback books for reuse and resale such as: local book exchanges, libraries, nursing homes, The Rescue Mission of Utica, Salvation Army Thrift Stores and the Kirkland Arts Center. However, many of these locations will not accept text books, encyclopedias, dictionaries and Readers Digest Condensed Books. As a first step, the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority encourages residents to utilize these locations for reuse and recycling of hardcover books whenever possible.

Authority's Recycling Procedure

Hardcover books cannot be set out at curbside, but can be delivered to the Authority's EcoDrop Utica located at 80 Leland Avenue Ext. from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and on Saturday from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Institutions, school districts and large hardcover book generators should contact Emily Albright at the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority offices (315) 733-1224 to schedule a delivery date and time.

At the recycling mill, the hard covers and book binding will be removed and the high-quality paper will be recycled into new paper products.

Hardcover books will not be collected at the curbside.

Catalogs, magazines, telephone books and paper back books can continue to be placed at curbside with the paper recyclables for collection by recycling haulers. See map below for location of the Residential Convenience Station in Utica.
