Revere Copper Products Inc. Achieves RecycleOne Business Certification

The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (Authority) is pleased to announce that Revere Copper Products Inc. (Revere), located at 1 Revere Park in Rome, NY, has obtained the Authority’s RecycleOne Business Certification.

The RecycleOne Business Certification requires an on-site review from Authority staff to verify that specific solid waste management, recycling and energy reduction criteria have been achieved. If the criteria have been achieved, the Authority will issue the facility or business an official RecycleOne Business Certification

This certification is free and available to businesses located in Oneida and Herkimer counties. Accepted businesses will receive RecycleOne logos and updated quarterly recycling information. RecycleOne Businesses are featured on the Authority’s website and will be eligible to win the Authority’s annual Recycling Champion Award.

Originally founded in 1801 by American patriot Paul Revere, Revere manufactures copper for use in electrical, architectural, telecommunication and industrial machinery markets. Because of the industrial nature of copper production, the environmental department at Revere manages some unique and trying waste streams.

In the revolutionary spirit of their founder, Revere has taken the following measures to ensure the environmental and human safety of their manufacturing processes:

  • Traces of copper are extracted and reclaimed from waste water, mud, grindings, dust, and oil used in the plant
  • Over 2 tons of cardboard is baled and marketed for recycling every month
  • Lightbulbs, batteries, and toner cartridges are all recycled
  • 300,000 – 400,000 gallons (per day) of cache water used in the plant is cleaned and reused for cooling and heating of various machinery
  • Approximately 700 tons of scrap metal (iron, steel, nickel, brass) recycled so far in 2018

“The safety of our employees and surrounding environment is a chief priority at Revere. We work hard to protect the river ecosystem adjacent to our facility, and we look to recycle and re-use our materials whenever possible. We are excited to join the Authority’s RecycleOne team,” says Paula DeStefano, Environmental Manager at Revere.

“Revere has to manage some difficult waste streams. They do a superb job at recycling and reusing inputs and outputs at the plant - without compromising the quality of their products or the safety of the environment and their employees. The Authority is happy to award Revere with this certification” says Emily Albright, Authority Director of Recycling.

Recycling in the workplace not only helps the environment, but can be economically advantageous by allowing for lower costs for waste removal and possible revenues from recycling. The program also encourages social responsibility, positive public response and sustainability.
