As many residents are aware, waste collection throughout the City of Utica has experienced inconsistencies over the past several months and has not met the standards previously expected.
Several factors have contributed to these issues, including staffing shortages and a lack of available CDL truck drivers—challenges currently affecting many organizations and departments. These workforce issues have continued to impact the City’s contracted waste hauler, CWSI. Additionally, Utica’s Pay-As-You-Throw system provides a higher level of service than many surrounding communities, which requires increased staffing and resources to operate effectively.
Over the past month, severe weather conditions have further exacerbated challenges related to timeliness and cleanliness. The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority is actively monitoring the situation and remains in regular communication with the contracted hauler. Coordination between CWSI and the City’s Department of Public Works has been critical to ensure streets are cleared and accessible for collection vehicles.
Moving forward, residents are encouraged to contact our office with any concerns or service issues. The Authority's Utica Solid Waste Coordinator can be contacted directly at 315-731-0238 or ohswa@ohswa.org. More information can also be found on the Authority's website at www.ohswa.org.
The Authority will provide updates as conditions change and improvements are implemented.
