HHW Opens for 32nd Season

The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (Authority) has officially opened its Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility for its 32nd season. This facility will be available to Oneida and Herkimer County residents until Monday, September 30th, 2024.

The HHW facility is located at the Authority’s Utica EcoDrop at 80 Leland Ave Extension, Utica, NY 13502 and is open Monday-Friday 8am to 4pm and Saturday 7am to 2pm. There is no charge for residents to use this facility. Please note that HHW is not accepted at the Authority’s Rome EcoDrop. Accepted HHW items include: 

  • Oil and Latex Based Paints
  • Paint Thinners
  • Chemistry Sets
  • Cleaning Solvents & Degreasers
  • Drain Cleaners
  • Fertilizers
  • Furniture Stripper
  • Glues/Sealants
  • Herbicides
  • Insecticides & Pesticides
  • Kerosene
  • Oven Cleaners
  • Photographic Chemicals
  • Polishes
  • Pool Chemicals
  • Rust Preventatives & Removers
  • Unusable Gasoline
  • Wood Preservatives

If improperly disposed of, HHW can pose threats to personal, public and environmental health. HHW items should be kept out of reach of children and pets and away from heat sources. They should also be stored in their original packaging with their labels intact to ensure safe disposal.

Households are limited to dropping off 15 wet gallons and/or 20 dry pounds of HHW per day. Only liquid paint is accepted; empty paint cans or cans with hardened paint are garbage items and should be placed in the garbage with their lids removed.

Businesses in Oneida and Herkimer Counties may also qualify to use the HHW facility. Businesses, schools, farms, and other organizations that are considered conditionally exempt may utilize the facility by appointment only and may be charged a disposal fee.
