Books

The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority encourages residents to always reuse and recycle whenever possible. There are several local locations that accept hardcover and paperback books for reuse, including book exchanges, libraries, and nursing homes. Some of these locations may not accept hardcover textbooks, encyclopedias, dictionaries, or Readers Digest Condensed Books.

Paperback books like phone books or chapter books are accepted for curbside recycling. At the recycling mills, the paper both on the inside and the outside of the book will be recovered to be recycled into new paper products. Hardcover books are not recyclable because of their hard binding, which has layers of cardboard, glue, and fabric or glossy paper. Hardcover books are no longer accepted at the Authority's EcoDrops and should be placed in the garbage for disposal if they cannot be reused or donated.
