Earth Day 2012

April 22nd marks the 42nd annual Earth Day when people from across the Country join together to participate in events that help improve and protect our environment. In celebration of Earth Day 2012 and the new Single Stream Recycling Center, the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority will be hosting an Earth Day Open House.

The Open House will be held on Saturday, April 21st from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm at the Oneida-Herkimer Recycling Center, 80 Leland Ave Ext., Utica.

We have a lot to celebrate this Earth Day!

  • A nationally recognized model for solid waste management systems
  • New Single Stream Recycling Center which makes recycling easier than ever for residents, businesses, institutions and industries in our region
  • Successful recycling initiative with over 700,000 tons of material recycled since 1991!
  • “Go Green” School Recycling Program with involvement from more than 60 area school buildings

The day's events will include:

  • Single Stream Recycling Center Dedication Ceremony (10:30 am)
  • Informational Booths/Exhibits including recycling, energy efficiency and gardening/composting information
  • Free Tours of the Recycling Center
  • Free Confidential Paper Shredding in cooperation with CONFIDATA from 10 am until 2 pm—There will be a limit of three (3) boxes of papers/documents per vehicle. Businesses and professional offices are not eligible to participate in this event. Computer discs, tapes and other recording media will also be accepted but must be separated from the paper. All material will be immediately shredded and placed in a collection vehicle for recycling. Residents do not need to remove their name or other personal information from the documents.
  • Free Collection & Disposal of Unused Medication and Pharmaceuticals from 10 am until 2 pm in cooperation with the Mohawk Valley Pharmacist Society, Herkimer County Prevention Council Catholic Charities and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation—Accepted items include expired or unwanted prescriptions/medications (liquid, pill or powder form), over the counter medications & vitamins and veterinary/pet medications.
  • Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Drop-Off—Residents can drop off household hazardous waste and electronic material including paints, chemicals, electronics and more for proper recycling/disposal from 7:00 am- 2:00 pm at no cost.
  • Compost for Purchase—Screened, cured compost material will be available for purchase:
    • Bagged Price: Bags of compost weigh about 45 pounds each and are $2.00 each, or 3 bags for $5.00
    • Pick-up Truck Price: $15.00 per pick-up truck, $20.00 per large pick-up truck
    • Bulk Price: $15.00 per cubic yard loaded in your dump truck
