Garbage & Trash Collection Information

* EFFECTIVE MARCH 24, 2010 THERE WILL BE A CHANGE TO THE THURSDAY PICK-UP SCHEDULE

Spohn's Disposal Service will continue trash, garbage and recycling pick-up in the Village of Ilion.

Residents have the option to use either Village of Ilion garbage bags or toters/carts. Please note: Residents who do not participate in the waste system will not receive service for recycling or yard waste collection. The bag/toter system applies to all Village residents and businesses that do not have private dumpster service or a private collection dumpster contract.

If you choose to continue to use the Village of Ilion garbage bags, they are available at the following locations:

Rite Aid Pharmacy, Greenie's Market, Kinney Drugs, Nice-N-Easy, Fastrac, True Value Hardware, X-tra Mart, and Lennox Bros. Pharmacists
Cost for Village Bags: Large $3.60 and Small $2.95

If you choose to participate in the toter/cart system, please call the Oneida- Herkimer Solid Waste Authority Office at 733-1224 to order a toter and set-up an account.

Cost for Toter/Cart Service: (Toter/Cart payments to be made quarterly, in advance): 32 gallon - $20.50 per month; 64 gallon - $25.50 per month, 95 gallon - $31.50 per month

Large Quantities of Trash:

  • For large quantities of trash (including construction and demolition material) you may call a private hauler to rent a dumpster.
  • Wood, lumber or construction debris is not considered brush or yard waste.
  • Small pieces of wood, lumber or construction debris can be placed in toter or Village trash bag.

Rules for Setting Out Garbage:

  • Garbage SHOULD NOT be out before 3:00 PM but SHOULD be out before 12:00 midnight. Empty toters or cans must be removed from the curbside by 8:00 PM.
  • Trash bags SHOULD NOT EXCEED 50 POUNDS.
  • If your garbage or recyclables are not collected, contact Spohn's Disposal Service at 866-8820.

Rules for Setting Out Bulk Items:

  • ONE bulk item per property may be put out on the same day as garbage (i.e. dining table and set of four chairs equal five items which will take five weeks to dispose of).
  • Bulk items are defined as large household items (i.e. couch, chair, mattress, table, TV, rugs (must be rolled & tied), lamp, cabinet, dresser, etc.).
  • Bulk items must not be too large or heavy for two men to lift.
  • NO WOOD, LUMBER, CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS, PLASTER, WALLBOARD OR PLYWOOD WILL BE ACCEPTED AS BULK ITEMS.

Steel, Metal Items, Major Appliances and White Goods (Will be Collected Twice a Month)

  • Collected on the first and third Friday of each month.
  • These items must be called into the Village office at 895-7449 or Spohn's Disposal at 866-8820 to be put on a pick-up list for collection. Please call before the collection day and state what type of material is to be picked up (i.e. washer, dryer, freezer, refrigerator, water heaters etc.) so that special collection arrangements can be made.

Recyclables Collection

Rules for Setting Out Recyclables: (Paper Group & Container Group)

  1. Recyclables must be separated into 2 groups - Paper Group and Container Group
  2. Recyclables are to be put out the same day and time as your garbage and placed in a large clear plastic bag or in a reusable container.
  3. PAPER GROUP consists of cardboard, boxes, newspapers, brown paper bags, glossy ads, magazines, phone books, junk mail, envelopes, letters, computer paper, school paper, cardboard tubes, cereal boxes, tissue boxes and pizza boxes.
    • Paper group items should be placed in reusable containers, brown paper bags, or clear large plastic bags.
    • Boxes such as cereal, tissue, and other non-corrugated should be flattened.
    • Corrugated cardboard must be flattened and bundled and NOT to exceed 2 feet by 2 feet by 8 inches.
    • DO NOT use cardboard boxes as a container.
  4. CONTAINER GROUP consists of clear and colored glass jars and bottles, tin cans, aluminum cans, aluminum foil items, plastic bottles and containers with a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 in the recycling triangle.
    • All containers must be cleaned; lids must be removed and discarded.
    • Container group items should be placed in reusable containers or clear large plastic bags separate from the paper group.

DO NOT PLACE BAGS OF PLASTIC BAGS WITH THE RECYCLABLE ITEMS. PLASTIC GROCERY STORE BAGS ARE NOT RECYCLABLE UNDER OUR SYSTEM.

STYROFOAM PACKAGING IS NOT RECYCLABLE. Place all Styrofoam in a clear plastic bag or in your toter.

EXAMPLES OF NON-RECYCLABLE ITEMS: plastic toys, light bulbs, window glass, dishes, flower pots, cooking wares, wood, plaster/wallboard, oil containers, hard cover books, ceiling tile, pails and clothes hangers. Please dispose as garbage in Village bag or toter.

Miscellaneous Items

TIRES: Residents can take them directly to the Solid Waste Authority's Residential Convenience Station on Leland Ave in Utica or contact a private hauler to have them removed.

USED MOTOR OIL: Take to a service station, oil redemption center or the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority's Residential Convenience Station in Utica.

Green Waste Collection (Grass Clippings, Leaves, Garden Waste and Shrub Clippings)

Containerized Yard Waste Collection

Rules for green waste: grass clippings, leaves, garden waste and shrub clippings:

  1. Set out Sunday night for Monday pick-up. (April 1st - October 31st)
  2. Green waste should be free of stones, lumber, wood, paper, plastic pots/trays, or animal waste.
  3. ALL GREEN WASTE MUST BE PLACED IN A REUSABLE CONTAINER ONLY.
  4. NO PLASTIC BAGS CAN BE USED.
  5. BRUSH AND SHRUBS CANNOT EXCEED FOUR FEET (4') AND MUST BE PLACED IN A REUSABLE CONTAINER OR TIED AND BUNDLED.
  6. No container should exceed 50 pounds.
  7. Christmas trees will be collected at the end of December and during January.

Fall Leaf Collection

The Village of Ilion DPW will continue to pick up seasonal leaves in the Fall. Leaves must be placed loose at the curb for collection. Scheduling and preparation for this service will be announced by the Village of Ilion DPW. (November 1st - As long as weather permits)
