"Green" Spring Cleaning
February 22 2012
March 20th is the first day of Spring! It is just around the corner!
Spring, who doesn't love it? Spring brings longer days, warmer temperatures and the traditional spring house cleaning. Spring is the perfect time to clean and organize your garage, basement and cabinets. As you sort through your household, keep in mind that among the items that might be thrown out during spring cleaning are potentially dangerous household hazardous wastes (HHW). These wastes include items such as paint, oil and gasoline, pesticides, oven cleaners, photographic chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs and many other common household items. When discarded improperly, these products can cause problems for us and our environment.

To help dispose of these materials safely, the Solid Waste Authority has a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility for Oneida and Herkimer County residents to dispose of HHW at no cost. HHW will be accepted from April 2nd through September of this year.

The facility is located on Leland Avenue in Utica, and will be open for residents Monday-Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and on Saturdays from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM from APRIL 2ND, 2012 through September 2012. No appointments are necessary for households. Certain businesses may also qualify as Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQG) to use the facility. To obtain approval, please call the Authority Office at 733-1224.
