Information
for Recycling and Proper Disposal of Computer Equipment
Attached is information
developed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
and the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority that addresses the recycling
of obsolete computer equipment.
It has been the experience of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation
that the CRT Tubes (computer monitors) are generally hazardous waste due
to the lead content and therefore assume them to be and would require
test results to prove otherwise.
Everyone, other than a household residence, who disposes of computer
equipment is regulated as a hazardous waste generator. If computer monitors
were to be disposed of, they would be regulated as any other waste the
facility may generate. Unless managed as "used electronics" they would
need to be labeled, stored & properly disposed of as any other hazardous
waste. Do not place computer monitors or CRT's in trash or dumpster!
Authority's Recycling/Disposal Procedure:
1. Inventory and sort all computer equipment being recycled or disposed
of.
2. Place all computer monitors and cathode ray tubes (CRT's) in gaylord
cardboard boxes (4' X 4') Gaylord boxes may be obtained at the Authority's
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility on Leland Ave in Utica.
(Contact the Authority's office for availability of boxes)
3. Place all other computer equipment together in a separate gaylord box.
4. This program only includes computer monitors, CRT's, CPU's, printers,
inkjet and toner cartridges and other computer equipment. Place all
fax machines and copiers in the trash.
5. If you have a small number of computer monitors and computer equipment,
you may deliver them loose.
6. Complete the attached Shipping Manifest Form for only the computers
monitors and cathode ray tubes (CRT's) in each gaylord box being delivered
to the Authority's facility.
7. A fee of $ 5.00 will be charged for each computer
monitor (CRT's) up to a screen size of 17 inches. Please contact the Authority
office for prices on larger CRT's and television sets.
8. Complete the attached "C7 Notification Form" and submit to the
NYS Department of Environmental Conservation in Albany.
9. Contact David Lupinski or Joshua Olbrys at the Oneida-Herkimer
Solid Waste Authority offices at 733-1224 to schedule a delivery
date and time.
10. Deliver computer monitors, CRT's and other computer equipment on the
scheduled day along with the appropriate fees to the Authority's Household
Hazardous Waste Collection Facility on Leland Ave in Utica.
